ZIFF 2024: Understanding contracts in independent film production
At the last edition of the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), the ACP-EU Culture program collaborated with the festival to organize a masterclass dedicated to independent film financing, targeting young Tanzanian filmmakers attending the 19th International Youth Media Summit (IYMS).
In this context, Senegalese-Mauritanian director Rama Thiaw discussed the intricacies of contracts and film financing. “For this session, I chose to talk about contracts because their drafting remains obscure for some,” she revealed.
The discussion also explored various modes of financing. “Our governments must understand that creating a work mobilizes a real industry. By investing in film and audiovisuals, they promote the emergence of a sustainable economy in their country,” emphasized Ugandan filmmaker Eleanor Nabwiso. She also stressed the need for increased private investment and the mobilization of African patrons.
Overall, the audience appreciated the clarifications provided on the financing of audiovisual projects, and especially that these financing opportunities are made accessible, provided one knows the legal aspects involved.
