The Rwanda Film Office – a partner of the ACP Clap scheme of the ACP-EU Culture Programme – has just launched a call for projects with a total budget of RWF 184 million (EUR 182,650) to support filmmakers at different stages of production, from writing to post-production. This pilot project is an important step in the process of structuring the audiovisual sector in Rwanda. It was made possible thanks to the support of the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) and ACP-EU Culture.
The project mainly targets individual filmmakers, film-related NGOs and production companies.
Rwanda’s audiovisual sector has great potential for job creation and income generation. It also promotes Rwanda internationally and disseminates its culture to attract more tourists. In Africa, the sector has the potential to create 20 million jobs and contribute USD 20 billion to the continent’s combined GDP, as recently highlighted in a UNESCO study.
In line with this, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) launched the Rwanda Film Office (RFO) initiative in 2019 to centralise audiovisual and film services and help audiovisual stakeholders build their operational capacity.
Since the beginning of the initiative and thanks to the support of partners such as GIZ and OIF, the Rwanda Film Office is entering a new phase. With this first call, up to 26 projects will be supported, ranging from scriptwriting to post-production. Grants range from RWF 200,000 (EUR 200) for pitch support to RWF 30,000,000 (EUR 29,600) for production and RWF 82,500,000 (EUR 81,300) for an international co-production, co-founded by the IOF to strengthen productions from ACP countries.
To meet the needs of the sector, this call has been designed in close consultation with filmmakers and the Rwanda Film Federation, who will also be involved in the selection process. Deadline for submission is set to 15 October 2022.
