UNESCO to restore Bandiagara site in Mali

UNESCO will restore the Bandiagara site, classified as a World Heritage Site.

A long sandstone chain located in the Mopti region of Mali, the Cliff of Bandiagara stretches over 200 kilometres in the north-east of the country, around the Dogon Country, and is home to 289 villages.

The $1 million project aims to rehabilitate buildings and sites devoted to traditional culture.

Since 2015, the security crisis in central Mali has led to the total or partial destruction of nearly 30 villages.

In addition to the restoration of sites, UNESCO will finance income-generating activities for women, who have been badly affected by the difficult context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
